Iran to provide US heavy water needs

TEHRAN, Apr. 23 (MNA) – AEOI spokesperson has told reporters Iran will implement a deal signed with US to provide the country’s needs to heavy water.

Behrouz Kamalvandi told Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB on Saturday that AEOI had signed deals with the US after months of negotiations; “according to provisions of JCPOA, Iran’s heavy water should not exceed 130 tons, thus the surplus heavy water should be sold or leased to international customers; we have been studying different deal conditions with different countries and finalized a deal with the States,” Kamalvandi said.

“Heavy water is a strategic product and Iran could not easily offer it in conventional markets, since its uses are limited, and many economic considerations should be made before any deal,” he told the IRIB. “A subsidy of AEOI signed the deal with the US partner which will be implemented upcoming week; contrary to media speculations, Iran’s heavy water production unit will remain active and will improve products in quality.”

Kamalvandi said that a US heavy water lab had approved the high quality of Iran’s tritium; “Savana River Laboratories catapulted Iran to a high place in terms of producing heavy water through approving the quality of our product; we have a long-term plan and vision to commercial marketing of the valuable product. In road to markets, we should provide it in more competitive prices which entails reducing marginal cost of the product,” he detailed.

“Heavy water (tritium) has wider applications in medicine and it is predicted that the demand for this strategic good would skyrocket and with it the prices would equally rise,” he told IRIB.
